  TROUT LEASE REGISTRATION BEGINS SEP 20, 2026 Read This Page Fully Before Purchase CHANGES MADE for 2027 There is one private access cold water trout lease available this year, Crabapple Creek, near Eckert Texas ( maps: use Willow City, TX - 17 miles N of Fredericksburg - to check your driving distance). This lease is about 3000 ft (more than 1/2 mile) of one of the premier sight fishable spring-fed live water creeks of the Hill Country. The lease will be stocked with 650 pounds of 11" to 20" trout. [Important Notice: We know you want an early peek. But...Do not trespass! Our lease is on private land - the owner and family's home is onsite and they expect strict cooperation from our club with respecting their ownership and privacy.  Comings and goings are monitored. The only Lease access available to the Club is from December to April by lease members only.  Do not risk an unpleasant visit with Gillespie County law enforcement.] The Trout Lease Manager is Don Anderson who volunteers time each week feeding and maintaining your trout leases.  Be sure to email and thank him for making TROUT LEASE 2027 run smoothly. Contact Don Anderson at DonAnderson@thcff.org if you have lease access questions or need to report a lease abuse issue.   Purchase Your Lease Membership You must be logged into your Club Membership Profile to complete the Online-Registration Applicants may purchase ONE LEASE MEMBERSHIP per person.   Number of Lease Memberships is limited to avoid over-crowding. Member Slots are sold on a first come first serve basis until the lease is sold out. Step 1:  Verify Your USPS Mailing Address When you receive your Lease Registration Invitation Newsletter, check the member profile information on your Letter before you purchase your lease slot. Your Club Member profile address on your invitation is the exact name and address your LEASE ACCESS PACKET will be mailed.  (USPS Advantage will only deliver to legal addresses found in the USPS Database). Significant costs are imposed on Applicants for the time, materials, and postage to replace Lease Packets mailed to incorrect or undeliverable addresses.  Step 2: Purchase a Lease Membership Lease applicants must have an ACTIVE THCFF 2026 or 2027 Club Membership to purchase a Trout Lease Membership. Pick the SINGLE option that best fits your fishing goals. PURCHASED a THCFF 2027 CLUB MEMBERSHIP. Lease Access The Trout Lease land is privately owned property and activity is monitored by landowner. No one is allowed on lease property without a colored wrist band and parking permit tag showing other people your lease Membership. Trespassers are reported to the Game Warden.  NOTE: Members paying by the "Membership Auto-renew Credit Card System" have a TCHFF 2027 MEMBERSHIP by default. NOTE: Lease payments secured by checks are held-back until the check clears your bank. If you choose to pay by check, funds must be received from your bank BEFORE THE ENTIRE LEASE IS SOLD OUT, regardless of the date on the check.  Lease slots are always sold on a first-come first-serve basis. Step 3: It's each Lease Member's responsibility to read each lease email and then contact Lease Manager if there is still confusion.   Each lease member will automatically receive an email confirmation upon successfully completing the online payment process. You will be notified of any registration problems by email as soon as a problem is discovered. You will be notified of the Trout Stocking date and the first day of fishing by Trout Lease Newsletter.  During the lease year you will be notified of lease maintenance dates, tournaments, temporary lease closing dates, or lease status changes by email.   Read every email to stay informed. There are new lease sign/sign out instructions.  TROUT LEASE 2027 Access The Trout Lease is private property.  The landowner lives onsite and monitors comings and goings. Unauthorized persons will be reported to the Game Warden for further action. Lease members are required to identify themselves with the following items anytime they are on lease property to show they belong to the THCFF Trout Lease Program. __________________  A colored imprinted TEXAS HILL COUNTRY FLY FISHERS 2027 wristband like the photo below must be visible on your person while on lease property.  A Parking Permit Mirror 2027 Hang Tag- must be visible on your vehicle mirror while on lease property. Please be sure to read the Liability & Privacy Notices below.

  By completing the Lease registration Application you are acknowledging your full agreement to these following items: 
  

  1. Lease activity will be actively monitored by Lease Managers and Land Owners. 
  2. Sign-in sheets are inspected for completeness accuracy.  Be sure to "sign-out" whenever you leave the property.  This info is used to manage lease usage.
  3. Surveillance cameras are used at critical locations to monitor comings and goings.

  • Casting Practice begins at 5:30.  Bring your casting rig.
  • Fly tying begins at 6:30-7:00.  Bring your own vice and materials, a limited number of loaners are available. We have a large "stash" of donated materials as well. 

  

  Fly tying: "Rio Bandito" 

  
  

  Originally developed by Chris Johnson of Living Waters Fly Fishing and now sold commercially by Umpqua Feather Merchants, there are many adaptations and methods for tying this fly, and we plan to demonstrate a few.

  The Rio Bandito is a Hill Country staple. Not only is it an excellent Rio Grande cichlid fly, but it is also versatile for all species. Texas fly anglers will tell you that this fly catches bass, carp, sunfish, and trout (some even swear by its success catching tilapia on the San Antonio River Walk).
  
  With the upcoming trout season, this is an excellent pattern to learn. Club member Rick Wilson considers this fly an essential choice for the trout lease, and I'd have to agree. 
  
  Materials:
  
    - Hook: Jig, size 12 (adjust size as desired)
    - Bead: Tungsten slotted bead head in red, 3.8mm (adjust size based on hook)
    - Thread: 70D or 6/0 thread in rust/crawfish orange
    - Legs: Barred pumpkin legs
    - Body/Tail: Aussie possum fur in crawfish orange
        - Substitutes: Rabbit zonker in crawfish orange (tail); Whitlock SLF dubbing or similar in crawfish orange (body)
  
  Tools Needed:
  
    - Bobbin
    - Scissors
    - Whip finish tool
    - Bodkin
    - Dubbing spinner (optional, depending on method used)
    - Dubbing/CDC clip

  We are excited to return to the Waring Volunteer Fire Dept, VFD, the original location for our fly tying nights and the group favorite!  We have a great tying room, a great casting lot, and Guadalupe River fishing an easy walk away.

  dust pan and brush.  We want to keep our meeting space clean as we are very
  thankful for the First Baptist Church allowing the use of this location.

  Tiers are encouraged to bring their own tools and materials
  if available. But material, tools, and vises for loan are
  available and to be used to tiers of all skill levels and
  experience. 
  

  You are welcome to tie no matter skill level or experience.
  If you want to tie flies we will make sure you learn how to tie flies!
  Experienced tiers will be available to assist new and learning tiers if needed.

  
  

   

  GOODFLY INC. NEEDS YOUR SPARE FLIES

  The GoodFly Organization is in needs your spare bass and panfish flies to for their Spring and Summer Fly Workshops.  At the end of each teaching session attendees are given a small filled flybox to begin their fly fishing journey. 

  At least 150 flies per workshop are used so they easily giveaway more than 1000 flies  per season. A good place to begin is to go through your own fly box and donate any flies you know you will never fish. Or you may ties a couple of dozen flies just for this project. 

  All fly donations are greatly appreciated. Your contribution may be dropped off at any THCFF fly tying session or mail them to:

  Experienced tiers will be present to teach new and more experienced tiers, or answer with any fly tying questions you may have to the best of our abilities. 

  • Bring spare flies for the "Club's Fly Library". 
  • Simple snacks and drinks will be provided at tying night. Attendees are also welcome to bring hot or cold food or drink to share. 
  • (Space will be provided, weather and light permitting, to practice or demonstrate casting. Experienced casters will gladly present to help.)
  • Material, vises, tools, and material will be provided for new tiers.

    Greg Wilson Bio

   

  Gregory (Greg) Wilson is an Extension Program Specialist I with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, based at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in San Angelo. He works as an integrated pest management (IPM) specialist for the Southern Rolling Plains, with primary focus on cotton and secondary work on small grains, plus sorghum and other row crops.

  Extension work
  Hired in fall 2022, he supports producers with scouting, trapping, and application-efficacy work, and has worked to restart a cotton scouting program in the San Angelo region. He also handles producer education and some urban and structural IPM requests. Kerns has described him as skilled in applied pest-management research and Extension coordination for cotton, sorghum, and corn in the Southern Rolling Plains.

  Education

  • 2013: double bachelor’s in agronomy and entomology (Texas A&M), with emphasis on soil health, food systems, forages, IPM, and agricultural leadership
  • 2013–2015: graduate assistant, Soil and Crop Sciences; 2014 Special Achievement Award for Graduate Teaching
  • 2016: master’s in plant breeding
  • Doctoral work in entomology under David Kerns (in progress as of the 2022 AgriLife profiles)

  Texas Hill Country Fly Fishers Club Supports

  

  GoodFly makes possible workshops to the heroes who serve our communities. We strive to give first responders the tools they need to manage stress and enhance emotional health. 

  GoodFly conducts free, one-day fly casting workshops for first responders. Our program proposes to make these benefits available through free fly-casting and fly tying instruction. We end the day by bank fishing on a pond, lake or river. 

  Workshops are typically: 

  • A Full Day Casting Workshop (8:30 am to 4:00 pm) - at a local facility with an A/C building, space for casting, and a body of water for fishing.
  • Coffee, breakfast food, drinks, lunch and all equipment is provided.
  • A supportive environment created by instructors engaging with participants.​​​

  Each of these activities has a component of practice that can be done on or off the water and still provide stress-relieving benefits. For example, the rhythmic motion of casting mimics mediation and can be done in the yard, in the neighborhood street, or on the water!​

  Stress-relieving practices learned during the day can be applied to the art of fly fishing or used as a part of a meditative routine that offers continued assistance in renewing the mind and refreshing the spirit. 

  Participants of all levels of skill and experience will benefit from a Good Fly Fly Fishing Workshop!
